The Phantom Blade Zero Power Surge is your weapon's ultimate, and it is one of exactly three actions in the game that grant full-duration super armor. While it runs you cannot be interrupted, and it restores a large amount of Sha Chi. That makes it the escape button as much as the big damage button.

Super armor is the escape button

The intended failure state in this game is being surrounded: three or more enemies pressing at once, Sha Chi draining on every blocked hit, and no room left to parry the next blue flash. Power Surge answers that directly — you cannot be interrupted during it, and you come out of it with a full-ish bar.

Treat it as a defensive resource with a damage animation attached, not as the button you save for a health bar. Reaching for it while your Sha Chi is empty is usually too late, because the cost is paid from the same bar. Groups are where this matters most — enemy formations are built to drain you from several directions at once.

A different Phantom Blade Zero Power Surge per weapon

There is no shared ultimate animation. Every primary weapon delivers a different one:

WeaponPower Surge

Sword

A multi-hit slash combo

Greatsword

The Earth Splitter shockwave

Dual Blades

A multi-target dancing strike

Spear

A wide arc sweep

Arm Cannon

A devastating barrage

Because you carry two primary weapons, you carry two different Power Surges. Switching weapons both refills Sha Chi and changes which ultimate is available, so the weapon swap doubles as the ultimate swap.

How Sha Chi Essence charges it

Power Surge runs on Sha Chi Essence, which is a different meter from Sha Chi itself. Essence builds in three ways:

  1. Actively spending Sha Chi

Heavy attacks and Sha Chi combos convert Essence, so a build that only blocks charges it slowly.

  2. A perfect parry on a Brutal Move,

which grants a larger amount and raises the rate Essence accumulates.

  3. Ghostep-ing through a Killer Move,

which grants a smaller amount plus a damage buff on your next attack.

The result is that your fastest route to an ultimate is good defense, not grinding. A player who plays purely passively will find Power Surge always close to empty. How Sha Chi is spent and restored covers the base meter these effects build on.

The other two super-armor actions

Power Surge is one of three. The other two are using a Phantom Edge with R2, and performing an Execution on an enemy whose Sha Chi you have emptied. All three grant full-duration super armor and restore a large amount of Sha Chi.

That trio is what breaks up a group fight, because it is the only window in which you cannot be interrupted while surrounded. What the Phantom Edge does and how it also opens routes covers the second of the three, and the third is the execution window you get from draining an enemy's bar.
