Phantom Blade Zero Sha Chi is the game's single combat resource, and both you and the enemies run on it. There is no separate stamina, posture or shield bar — offence and defence compete for the same pool, so the fight is a contest to drain the enemy's Sha Chi while keeping your own.

The Phantom Blade Zero Sha Chi cost and refund table
| Action | Effect on your Sha Chi |
|---|---|
Holding guard | Drains continuously, faster on every blocked hit |
Guarding while attacking | Drains at double rate |
Landing normal attack combos | Rebuilds it |
Defeating an enemy | Rebuilds it |
Switching primary weapons | Restores the gauge in full |
Ghostep after a correct read | Restores a large amount |
Power Surge, Execution, Phantom Edge | Restores a large amount |
The pattern is the whole lesson: almost everything that protects you spends the bar, and almost everything that rewards you for playing well fills it back.
Guarding is what drains it
Standing in block does not solve anything — it just spends the resource you need for the next parry. Because a failed defense and a lazy one cost the same thing, running dry leaves you unable to parry at all, which turns a good read on the enemy's next attack into a free hit for them.
The fix is not to defend less. It is to defend better: tap the parry instead of holding the block, so the defense is free. How the parry input works and what it costs has the timing side of that.
Weapon speed is resource speed
Fast weapons generate Sha Chi faster than slow ones. Dual Blades and the Sword are the quickest generators; Greatsword and Arm Cannon are the slowest. Weapon choice is therefore a resource choice before it is a damage choice, and it interacts with the weapon switch restoring the gauge in full.
That is what makes a mixed pair practical: lead with the fast generator to refill, switch to the heavy hitter when you have the bar to pay for it. How the pairing and the slots work covers the structure.
The enemy side of the bar
Your combos and parries drain an enemy's Sha Chi as well. Empty it and their guard shatters — they cannot react or defend until it refills, and that window is what unlocks executions and burst damage.
This is why the parry is an offensive tool. A perfect parry deals heavy guard damage and heavy Sha Chi damage at the same time, so every correct read pushes the enemy closer to the break state while handing your own bar back.
Sha Chi Essence is a second meter
Sha Chi Essence is separate from Sha Chi and it is what pays for Power Surge. It builds when you actively spend Sha Chi — heavy attacks and Sha Chi combos convert it — and it builds faster from correct defensive reads: a perfect parry on a Brutal Move grants more Essence and raises the accumulation rate, while Ghostep-ing through a Killer Move grants a smaller amount plus a damage buff on the next attack.
Because Essence only builds while you are spending the base pool, a purely passive run charges it slowly. Power Surge, the per-weapon ultimates and how Essence fills covers the payoff.
The loop, in order
Read the color on the incoming attack.
Take it on the parry (blue) or the dodge (red).
Ghostep behind the enemy and recover Sha Chi from the read.
Cash the opening with a combo until their Sha Chi is empty.
Switch weapons to top the gauge back to full when it runs low.
Turtling is the playstyle the resource system is built to punish. The bar is not a budget you defend with — it is the score you are trying to win with.
