Phantom Blade Zero enemy formations do not run as separate combatants with separate brains. Individual and group behavior run through one system that decides whether an enemy strikes alone, whether it attacks as part of a formation, and how the members interact. What looks like several enemies attacking at once is often a single move modeled across several bodies.

How Phantom Blade Zero enemy formations behave

The point of the collective system is to avoid both failure modes of a multi-enemy fight — being swarmed, and standing idle while enemies take turns. A coordinated strike from four disciples is one cue with one answer, not four cues that need four responses.

The cost is directional. A formation's damage pressure is aimed at forcing you to spend Sha Chi on defense in several directions at once, so the Sha Chi you have left for the next Brutal Move parry is the real price of being in a formation.

The Seven Judgments formation

The clearest public example is the Seven Judgments sword formation, where seven corrupted warriors surround Soul in the positions of the Big Dipper constellation with Decree holding the key position and coordinating the others through the formation.

  • The group maintains its shape while several disciples launch coordinated multi-directional strikes simultaneously.
  • An individual disciple steps in alone for a quick hit when they get close enough.
  • Decree issues the orders, including ordering the formation to lift him and commanding a group attack from a distance.

Because those group attacks are single telegraphed moves rather than several unrelated hits, the read is one cue with one answer — the same discipline as a normal fight, just with more bodies involved. The full Seven Judgments breakdown lists every named attack with its correct answer across both phases.

The health pool is collective too

The formation's health is managed as a group rather than as seven independent bars. The disciples sacrifice their own health to heal Decree, Decree revives them from his own health if fewer than three remain, and the total pool never grows.

That is why there is no burst window that skips the healing mechanic — the phase ends when the combined total is gone, not when one body drops.

Buying space with super armor

When several directions press at once, the answer is not to defend harder. It is one of the three actions that grant full-duration super armor and restore a large amount of Sha Chi:

  • Power Surge, the weapon ultimate.
  • A Phantom Edge, used with R2.
  • An Execution, once an enemy's Sha Chi is empty.

All three cannot be interrupted, and all three pay back the Sha Chi that defending a formation would have drained. How Power Surge, Essence and the super-armor trio work covers when to reach for each one.
